A year and some months after starting our little blog, I thought it was time to update the FAQ. Especially since Susan and I aren’t the only contributors any longer!
If any of you, Dear Readers, think of something that should be here but isn’t, please do drop a comment.
Q: What exactly is this thing?
A: It’s an entire blog all about Keith Olbermann. Yes, really. Our goal is to be informational, and maybe a little opinionated, regarding one Mr. K. Olbermann. By bringing together recaps of his shows (both Countdown and The Big Show hour of the Dan Patrick Show) with web links, we can tell you what’s going on with our favorite newscaster on a daily basis. We try to do that with humor and a touch of snark, with the occasional lapse into fangirl squee.
As of this writing (January 2007), there are several Keith-centric sites on the web. But when we started in late September 2005, it was a pretty fallow field. So yes, ERT pre-dates the Special Comments and the groundswell of interest those have brought to the man. Some of us have even been fans since his days at ESPN.
Q: You’re biased!
A: Damn right. This is, first and foremost, a fan site. So of course we’re more apt to accentuate the positive aspects of KO’s career. But the man’s not perfect and we’re not apologists.
Q: No, I meant your politics!
A: Yeah. Well. While this is not meant to be a political blog, it’s sometimes a fine line between commenting on a news program and commenting on the news. Our contributors do tend to lean Left to varying degrees, as you might expect, and that will come out from time to time. But we’re really not here to discuss politics; those discussions are better suited to other blogs.
Q: What’s the deal with the ties?
A: Before we started this enterprise, I’d IM Susan after the show and one of the first comments from either of us was usually about KO’s wardrobe choices for the evening. So when she and I started the blog it seemed like a natural. We get a lot of positive comments on it, too.
Q: Well I think Olbermann’s a lousy, no-good, son-of-a…
A: You are certainly entitled to your opinion. Please express it elsewhere.
Q: Why are the comments moderated?
A: There was a period of time where there were a lot of people who wanted to stir up trouble in the Olbersphere. While that’s died down, the trolls do pop up now and then. I have no intention of letting this thing be a free-for-all, so comments remain moderated. On average, one comment per month will be denied and that is usually due to troll behavior or name calling (see the item immediately preceding). Most weekdays your comment will show up within an hour. Unless you comment at 3 am. And if that’s the case, you really should do something about that insomnia.
Q: “Olbersphere?”
A: A bit too precious, I know. I don’t recall who among the various KO website writers coined it, but it’s kinda stuck.
Q: Where can I find out about…?
A: If you want more info on KO, there’s a list of links in the sidebar. There’s also a link to some trivia by ERT readers and contributors. If you’re looking for malicious rumor, gossip, and innuendo (especially opinions on his personal relationships) this isn’t the place. We respect the man’s privacy and only deal with what he has said or done in public. And considering how much he likes to talk about himself, that’s quite a bit of information.
Q: Do you know about…?
A: If there is something online concerning KO, yes, we probably do. A lot of work goes on behind the scenes here to that end, and there are some things we choose not to post. But sometimes we do miss things, so we’re always happy to have our readers send in tips! There’s an email address up in the sidebar for that very purpose.
And our three biggest search items:
Q: What about Keith Olbermann’s girlfriend?
A: What about her? He has a girlfriend. Her name is Katy. She’s 20+ years younger than him. She’s from LA. They share an apartment. Anything beyond that is none of your damn business.
Q: Is Keith Olbermann Gay?
A: Since he has a live-in girlfriend, I doubt it.
Q: Is Keith Olbermann Jewish?
A: Everything I’ve read (and boy howdy, it’s a lot!) indicates he’s a Unitarian.
