“More Anticipated Than Sex In The City”

YAY! Keith Olbermann finally showed up on the Dan Patrick Show. No, it wasn’t the Big Show Hour - more like the Big Show 15 minutes, but these days we will take what we can get. And what we got was an entertaining discussion of DP joining Football Night in America, a look at the accuracy of the rumors surrounding this move, and some humorous sports talk.

And now as promised, our recap:

Keith was a little bummed about how the news came out. He was hoping that Dan would have popped out of a cake on the Critics’ Tour. Dan had been saving his pasties for this. Thankfully in the intervening year since the demise of The Big Show, no one’s sense of humor has matured.

Keith and Dan decry the rumors circulating around this FNIA move. One rumor (posted here via a Reuters’ article yesterday) was that Dan was set to join NBC until ESPN realized that he would be reunited with Keith, and then they invoked a TV no compete clause. Keith claims that ESPN would have not allowed Dan to do TV with or without him. They also laugh off rumors that Bob Costas was shocked to learn Dan would be doing highlights.

The two talk about being taken to the ’secret room’ of NBC and given hats and shirts. Someone passed around one of Costas’ Emmys (apparently to mess with Dan’s head) but Keith wouldn’t touch it. Not because he’s superstitious, but because he was afraid he would not give it back. Apparently an Edward R. Murrow Award isn’t quite enough.

This starts a run of Costas jokes, most involving his large number of Emmys which Keith thinks could be turned into a theme park tour - “Come see how the Emmys have changed throughout the years…”.

They then moved onto sports talk. Sort of. Keith thinks his mustache of the 90’s was superior to Jason Giambi’s current stache because his wasn’t dyed. Indeed KO shaved it because it was the first thing to go gray. Too much information, maybe?

Bob Dole thought the Brooklyn Dodgers were in Brooklyn. In 1996.

DP wants KO’s opinion on his idea for a sports rehabilitation clinic for retiring athletes like Brett Favre. Keith thinks a half-way house isn’t a bad idea, but prefers players just play until they fall over. As Keith says, “retirement is for a long time”.

Keith cannot see Barry Bonds with the Red Sox. He thinks Bonds goes against what the Red Sox like to think they are.

And finally, Keith tells Dan that he is not jealous of the money Rush Limbaugh got. We don’t believe it for a minute.

And that was the itty-bitty Big Show. You can hear it yourself over at DP.com (third hour).

KO on the DP Show Tuesday

Looking for some KO during his vacation? Well it seems that Keith Olbermann will be joining Dan Patrick on Tuesday morning’s Dan Patrick Show to talk about their new Football Night in America venture . According to Rachel Maddow, who subbed for Keith on Countdown tonight, KO will be on during the radio show’s third hour (11:00 Eastern Time).

According to a Reuters article, it was hoped that DP could join KO last season, except that ESPN invoked a no-TV NFL coverage clause in his contract due to Keith’s presence.

Ebersol said that in talking to ESPN chief George Bodenheimer and ESPN executive vp John Skipper, things changed a bit after they realized Patrick would be reuniting with Olbermann. ESPN invoked a contract provision that kept Patrick from working on “They had a right, buried in the boilerplate of the deal, to keep him off of TV for a year, said NBC Sports Chairman Dick Ebersol.

If KO shows during Tuesday’s DP Show, we will recap it here and at Palaver. If you haven’t had a chance to listen to Dan’s new ‘non-ESPN’ show yet, it is a good time to give it a try. You can stream it live at the show’s internet site - DP.com.

Predictions that went horribly wrong
predictions-that-went-horribly-wrong

Back when Keith Olbermann and Dan Patrick were still doing the Big Show radio hour together, they engaged in their yearly fortune telling baseball ritual known as “Predictions Destined to Go Horribly Wrong”. They predicted the winners of the division titles, wild cards, playoffs, World Series and various post-season awards. Peter Gammons also played along. Now that MLB has given out the last of its awards we can check how well KO did:

Keith’s prediction (actual winner)

Al East - Red Sox (Red Sox)

Al Central - Tigers (Indians)

AL West - A’s (Angels)

AL Wildcard - Indians (Yankees)

NL East - Braves (Phillies)

NL Central - Brewers (Cubs)

NL West D-Backs (D-backs)

NL Wildcard - Cardinals (Rockies)

World Series - Braves over Tigers (Red Sox over Rockies)

AL MVP - David Ortiz (Alex Rodriguez)

AL Cy Young - Justin Verlander (C. C. Sabathia)

NL MVP - Jeff Francoeur (Jimmy Rollins)

NL Cy Young - John Smotlz (Jake Peavy)

Keith is 2 for 13. DP did a bit better. You can find the results for Dan’s prediction over at Palaver, or at this old ESPN page. Peter Gammons results are also available at the ESPN page.
