“Can somebody get me Dick Trickle on the phone?”

For those of you who didn’t get the memo in time, here’s KO’s appearance on Letterman last night.

That “you’re an enormous man” statement of Letterman’s to KO made me laugh.

Dave did a very good job with Keith but was awful IMO with Danica Patrick. The other D.Patrick - Dan - did a much better job interviewing her the other day.

I haven’t watched Letterman in ages (except for when Keith & Dan where on), and I must say, the show is pretty bad. I guess I’m so use to the extremely sharp wits & writing of The Daily Show & Colbert Report, so that Letterman seems ancient and slow. I flipped around to Leno, and he is no better. I tried to watch Conan, and he’s pretty lame too.

Keith was not at his best, they both seemed like they knew very little about politics. Maybe Keith was a last minute fill in, but his terrific wit was no where to be seen during that interview. What a shame.

Also, Dave’s “enormous” comment told the world (what many have noticed for a while), ‘Keith, you are really getting FAT.’ I hope it is not some medical condition due to a prescription, like Houstonian had. If that is not the case, I think Keith really needs to get on diet plan. There are so many health problems that develop due to obesity. I know he’s really tall and the camera puts on weight, but his torso & gut look like President Taft, trust me, not a good look:

On Keith’s wiki page, it mentioned someone said he was fat, so he tackled it with a fun segment when he was on in L.A. I think Keith should do this on Countdown. I’ll donate $5 for every pound he loses, to the Obama campaign. (or to his favorite charity, if he prefers). I would also recommend Dr. Shaprio’s Picture Perfect eating. He’s based out of NYC and helped the NYC firefighters & police lose tons of weight. On ebay, his books are really cheap, and it does work. I don’t mean to be harpy about this, but I really want Keith around to continue to shine the light on these republican (and some dems) crooks & liars.

BTW: Taft “invented” the 7th inning stretch… :)

Ahh, I don’t think so.

Danica used to work for Rahal-Letterman as an Indy drivers. Maybe she was a bit nervous. I thought it was a fun interview. My hubby is very interested in REAL car racing (i.e. NOT NASCAR) and thought it was just fine.

Letterman, as a team owner, always has on the big winners like Graham Rahal, Danica, etc., that others may not.

He’s not quite to Taft, but he is enormous. I went and put on my Danica Patrick hat when I heard she was on the show.

I was at the “artist’s entrance” at CBS Studios near Third and Fairfax when Keith arrived for the Craig Ferguson show. KO is enormous.

At the risk of raising some hackles, I am sick and tired of this American obsession with valuing people based on physical appearance and body size.

Keith is no where near Taft’s size and looks very normal to me for a man his age. He is slightly portly and looked much thinner last night in that suit that fit than he did the last time he was on Letterman wearing a jacket so large the sleeves fell over his hands.

And, of course, the camera makes any of us look larger.

Yes, some people can develop health problems with additional weight, but not all, and others can kill themselves off early by being obsessed with exercise and being too thin (James Fixx, anyone?)

The biggest danger is yo-yo dieting and those who become depressed and anxious about not somehow being perfect within an appallingly narrow definition of what perfect may be.

We come in all shapes and sizes, and those change with age, childbirth (not Keith’s issue, of course), medications, and all kinds of hereditary variations.

If the Big Guy weighed 500 pounds or so, I could see reason for concern. But he is obviously very tall and has a very large frame, but he has a slight paunch and is not particularly fat.

I happen to be very petite, so much so that my feet do not hit the floor when I sit in a normal chair, and my type is out right now. I know that I will never have long legs and a non existent butt like the so called California girl, but I like the curvey way I look anyway.

I watched my Mom starving herself, drinking an awful chalky mess because she thought that she was fat at 133 pounds. No matter how many times she lost it, she soon put it back on again. That was obviously her set point, but she was always depressed about it and angry with herself, and when in the deprivation of whatever the diet of the moment might be, angry with everyone else as well, especially the daughter who happened to be tiny.

I admire Keith for his mind, his humor, and his bravery. I am also certain that he is smart enough to work with a health care professional if he has any health issues, which I would only consider possibly my business if he shared them with his audience.

I thought Keith was half kidding about the news people don’t know what they are talking about, but it seems the HuffPost took it a little to seriously:

BTW: That Liz Smith thing in Tumbleblogging was funny. The comments especially. They are all so outraged and never watch Keith anymore, but manage to recap his shows almost as good as the good folks of ERT. ;)

Letterman and Keith just don’t seem to mix.

Has Jon Stewart ever had Keith on? Now that seems to be a match made in talk show heaven.

I confess that I have never understood the appeal of Letterman.

Stewart and Colbert are frequently brilliant and always making the effort, but the network late night shows remind me of things people do when they have nothing else to do in their lives.

I occasionally turn on for a special guest, but otherwise, I am simply not interested.

“I was at the “artist’s entrance” at CBS Studios near Third and Fairfax when Keith arrived for the Craig Ferguson show. KO is enormous.”

Ok, Olberfann54321…define “enormous.”

Houstonian: “enormous” as in “physically imposing” and “towering.” I had no idea he was that tall.

Go back and look at the video at the point where Keith shakes hands with Dave. Dave is on a riser, probably around 10-12″ or so high. Yet, the top of his head is only an inch or two above Keith’s. My “little” brother is 6′4″, just like Keith. To anyone who is nowhere near that tall, someone that size IS “enormous”. They’re both toting around a few extra pounds, and that adds to the effect.

Rafismom, no hackles raised here. AMEN to what you said. All of it, especially that last sentence.

Relax Rafismom, I was half kidding with the “Taft” link. Of course I don’t “value” Keith because of his looks, but he has gained a ton of weight no matter how you want to slice it. Letterman said what everybody else was thinking. Anyway, perhaps we should not worry, Taft lived till he was 73! BTW, being thin & petite is always in, you needn’t worry to much about that… ;)

Has Keith ever been on Jon Stewart’s show? I thought I heard that Jon doesn’t really care for him. Anyone?

Keith was on The Daily Show once when Craig Kilborn was the host, and IIRC it got him in trouble with ESPN because he did it without permission. He’s never been on the show with Jon Stewart.

I’ve never heard anything indicating that Jon doesn’t care for KO. As a matter of fact, Keith is the one cable news guy that never shows up in those montages of cable news absurdity unless it’s because he’s sitting next to Matthews. (Speaking of absurdity, I’d love to see 6′3 1/2″ Keith standing next to 5′7″ Jon!)

I have a friend who is 6′4″ and about the build KO was before he started this last round of rotund (he’s been this heavy before and lost it). He’s incredibly physically imposing even to me, and I’m nearly 6′ tall myself.

Wow! David Letterman is over 6 foot tall as well. So for him to say KO is “enormous” must be something.

BTW, KO does have an extra vertebrae which probably doesn’t hurt (size wise I mean).

And I wonder how many double entendre “enormous” jokes KO had to endure (while smiling I’m sure) afterwards??? ;-)

GM, All, sorry if I came across as too strident yesterday and for the past ten days or so. My younger dog has a virulent form of bone cancer that came out of nowhere and had totally obliterated the ulna in her foreleg before it was caught.

The last test came in yesterday, and there is no hope. I am trying to keep her comfortable while knowing that I need to put her out of her misery. It has affected my reactions to the world of late.

When my Dad was in his late 40’s he developed exactly the same build Keith has, and he continued to swim, high dive, walk miles each day, and play tennis until he was killed at age 73. Perhaps why I see that build as normal and not at all life/health threatening.

Houstonian, this from Wikipedia:

“Olbermann has six lumbar vertebrae instead of the normal five.”

Given these posts, all I could think of was Mystery Science Theater’s “I’m huge!”:

Rafismom, sorry to hear about your dog. A couple friend of mine went through cancer with their dog. My sympathies.

Rafismom, I feel for you and you have my full sympathy. Losing pets is so hard, and you never want to have to face facts when you know one of them is ill in a way that just isn’t going to get any better. But when you do, you do the work of the angels in taking their suffering away.
